OPEN MEETINGS
— How often does the vice president of a school board take to the newspaper to chide district staff on lax observance of the Brown Act and California Public Records Act?  How often does she publicly urge fellow trustees to pay CalAware to come by and provide a training session on the sunshine laws' requirements?  You may be seeing it first in the Press Banner, where
Scotts Valley Unified School District Board Vice President Jondi Gumz begins by saying,

It’s time to press the reset button on the Scotts Valley Unified School District.

The board’s governance handbook says: “We want to be perceived by our
community as a governance team that is open and transparent in decision
making.”

Unfortunately, that might not be the case.

Let’s learn from experience and improve our practices. We need to
ensure our school district is following the intent and spirit of the
Brown Act and the California Public Records Act.
