PUBLIC INFORMATION -- The Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek reports that a Sacramento attorney's broad public records request to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes on behalf of anonymous residents last year threw municipal staff members into a tizzy seeking to respond. And now the city's left holding the bag.

Eventually, more than 10,000 pages of documents were produced, and boxes of printed e-mails and records sat stacked and waiting to be picked up at City Hall. But no one ever came for most of the documents, which had to do with the city's information technology provider, crime, city budgets and other matters.
"It was an arduous, arduous task for the city. To put everybody through this exercise for no reason, that really galled me," City Attorney Carol Lynch said.
The mysterious request, which has since been abandoned by attorney Brian Hildreth on behalf of clients he said are concerned Rancho Palos Verdes residents, was one thread of a web of accusations and denials that has led to two ongoing investigations by state officials into alleged improprieties by three City Council members.
