Privacy Policy

Your privacy is as important to us as to you. As in all other contexts in your life, you should control what personal information you want us to know, and how we are allowed to use it. But as in all other contexts, you may need to provide us with some personal information in order to get information, services or other items of value in return.

Specifically:

Anonymous Browsing -- We make no attempt to identify or track passive visitors to the site, nor do we agree to let others do so. We do keep track of how many times a page is visited, but not by whom. If you just want to see what is available to anyone, you can do that anonymously. You do not even need to enable cookies.

Newsletter Subscription -- If you want to receive our free CalAware Weekly newsletter by e-mail, we do require certain basic registration information, to give us an idea of who is following our news reports and, frankly, to allow us more effectively to ask you to become a member or otherwise support our work from time to time. None of this information is sold or rented to, or otherwise shared with, any other person or organization, for commercial or any other purposes.

Membership and Other Orders -- If you do become a member or order an item from our store, we collect your information to complete the order transaction, and store your information in our database. We do not store your credit card information. For these purposes, we do need you to enable cookies to make your use of the site’s advanced features possible and secure. But again, noneof this information is sold or rented to, or otherwise shared with, any other person or organization, for commercial or any other purposes.

Questions about the Law -- If you send in a QuickQuery asking about your rights or others’ obligations under some aspect of public forum law, we may use the question and our answer in a publicly accessible archive of legal Frequently Asked Questions to help others without their having to send a duplicative query. To enable this resource, the QuickQuery form is structured to keep your personally identifying information separate from your question about the law. If you phone in a question, the same approach is taken; we may include the question and answer in our archive for others’ benefit, but will not show your personally identifying information.

Other Issues – With the rapid rate of change in technology, its uses and abuses, we can’t predict what other privacy concerns may arise, but we will do our best to deal with them in a way consistent with this policy. If you have a question about our practices at any time, just let us know.

"None are so fond of secrets as those who do not mean to keep them; such persons covet secrets as a spendthrift covets money, for the purpose of circulation."

Charles Caleb Colton, Lacon
